Driver for Hire is an innovative online training program brought to you by the Canada Safety Council
in partnership with Bluedrop ISM, a leading training solutions provider, and funded by the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success Program.
Driver for Hire Online Training includes 8 core modules focusing on driver skills, safety, confidence, and overall performance. The interactive eLearning is available on-demand and from any device!
Module 1: Skills for Success
In this module, you will learn about the 9 Skills for Success and how you can apply them to common driver-for-hire situations.
Seat time: 25 minutes
Module 2: Safe Transportation of People and Product
Safety of yourself and your passengers or product is vital to the success of your business! In this module, you will learn about the federal, provincial, and municipal laws and regulatory requirements that affect the safe transportation of people and product from pick-up to drop-off.
Seat time: 35 minutes
Module 3: Defensive Driving Behaviours
In this module, you will learn about safe driving behaviours. Specifically, you will learn about road communication skills, the collision prevention formula, and defensive driving skills. You will also learn about the laws and penalties for distracted and impaired driving.
Seat time: 50 minutes
Module 4: Navigating Urban Settings Safely
When driving is your profession, safety of yourself and other road users is vital to the success of your business! In this module, you will learn what aggressive driving is, how to navigate safely in the city, and how to apply safety practices to keep others safe.
Seat time: 45 minutes
Module 5: Legal Resources and Collision Reporting
Drivers-for-hire are regulated by federal and provincial legislation, and municipal bylaws that apply where they work. In this module, you will learn about federal laws that apply to you across Canada, provincial laws that apply to your province, criminal offenses that relate to driving under the Criminal Code of Canada, and the demerit point system.

Module 6: An Excellent Customer Experience
Drivers-for-hire are employed by the customers they provide service to. In this module, you will explore what an excellent customer experience means to you, and apply the Skills for Success to create an excellent customer experience. Specifically, you will learn about communication in service settings, problem-solving skills, and collaboration and conflict management.
Seat time: 30 minutes
Module 7: Focus on Human Rights
In this module, you will learn about the rights of persons with disabilities and how to legally respond to issues persons with disabilities may encounter. You will also learn about diversity, equity and inclusion, and how to use inclusive language to avoid discriminating.
Seat time: 40 minutes
Module 8: Top Tips for Other Drivers
In this module, you will learn top tips for maximizing earnings, improving ratings, maintaining a fresh vehicle, dealing with emotional customers, and safe driving.

Driver for Hire is a new online, on-demand training course from Canada Safety Council, in partnership with Bluedrop ISM, and funded by the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success Program.
The eLearning course includes eight modules aimed to advance essential, job-specific skills for ride-share and related industry drivers. It augments foundational support competencies including collaboration, problem-solving, communications, and more. The duration of the training is between four and five hours.
Driver for Hire Online Training is hosted on Bluedrop ISM’s SkillsPass online training platform. Employers, Career Centres, and Drivers can access the no-charge online training NOW by registering on this website page. You will be contacted by a representative who will provide you with a link to the platform where you will be prompted to create an account on SkillsPass with a unique, personal email address, plus first and last name. From here, your learners will be able to engage with the training at their own pace, for up to two weeks after starting. Once completed, the learner will receive their digital completion certificate which will be stored and always accessible for viewing, printing, or sharing with employers via their account and unique SkillsPass Wallet.
There is no cost to the training during the rollout phase (until March 31, 2024) as it is fully funded by the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success Program during this time. The training is however valued at a price of approximately $229 plus tax per person. Driver for Hire pricing may be changed at any time without notice.
Drivers / learners must be registered by an employer, a career agency/counsellor, or a Driver for Hire representative to receive access to the training. Successful completion of the program and supplemental research survey is required for the potential $100 interac e-transfer honorarium as a ‘thank you’ in recognition of the learner’s participation.
This is a limited time offer open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or those individuals with refugee status that are legally authorized to work under all Canadian provincial and federal laws and regulations – with limited available seats for an honorarium. To confirm eligibility and access for your drivers, simply complete the registration intake form on this webpage. You’ll be connected with a Driver for Hire representative who will confirm eligibility and review all applicable Terms & Conditions.
Driver for Hire training was developed by the Canada Safety Council, the largest road safety organization in Canada, along with Subject Matter Experts in safe driving, regulations, and customer service. Furthermore, this training includes the Skills for Success Framework, developed by Economic and Social Development Canada.
No. This course can be taken prior to or after your Provincial driving requirements and license has been obtained. Driver for Hire Online training is NOT a substitute for obtaining an Provincially endorsed drivers license.
No, you are able to complete the online training at your own pace, for up to two weeks from the time you initiate the training.
There are knowledge checks and quizzes to test your knowledge throughout the various course modules.
